Goodnight, My LoveliesFear settled in my veins. Growing into a solid mass, panic bloomed from fear. What had started as a creeping cold mutated into a steel ball that lodged itself in my stomach, but not for long…I took another shaking step forward, apprehension wracking my brain, my body, rendering me helpless. Speechless. Panic was trailing slow tendrils across my skin, raising goosebumps as it traveled up my windpipe and into my mouth. Hold it. Hold it. Hold it…I couldn't.   
My lips parted and the ball of hardness that was my fear burst forth from me in a scream. I choked on it, pushing it back, but my body betrayed me, and I was senseless Goodnight, My Lovelies

The skies could not contain my joy last night. The ambiguity of the open fields were not enough to disguise my smile. The curved dome of the bus ceiling bounced my happiness back to me, sent it deep into my blood and rolling off my skin, intoxicating me. I was heavy, heady with it.

We walked hand in hand down a path we've taken time and time again. We traced fingers down roads well-traveled. When our lips met, I admit, I imagined you pressing them to my skin. Our hesitant steps drove scuffling feet to stir the fallen leaves and dead things we thought we'd left behind. And in that hour we saved for ourselves, I breathed you in and relished the quiet moments...

And I loved you with half a heart.

I loved you with half a heart as I learned to trust again. I loved you with half a heart to allow myself to be held. I loved you with half a heart in gratitude that you are everything my father is not. I loved you with half a heart to forgive and find closure. I loved you with half a heart to be comforted. I loved you with half a heart as you held me close.

But mostly, I loved you with half a heart so that I would always have room to love you more...
